Sunday River hosts first Eastern Superpark

In mid-April of 2006, history was made in the ski world. For the first time ever, an invite only superpark was constructed on the East Coast. The 1st annual Heat Harvest Superpark at Sunday River kicked off April 12, hosting a plethora of the most talented park skiers on this side of the continent. With our own private chairlift, we were given access to the closed off White Cap Mountain and the trail that gave birth to the Superpark child, White Heat.

The history of the HHSP:

In early winter of last year, Meathead Films brainstormed with the idea to spark a new respect for the underrepresented Eastern park skier. Too many years had passed with resorts building and hosting Superpark events around the world, with the exception of our region. We've seen the photos, we've seen the video, but we've seen nothing of the likes in the East. After weeks of sketches and drafts at the Meathead office, specific features for the Superpark began to materialize. Not only did Geoff McDonald use his Tony Hawk Pro Skater-like mind, Meathead Films reached out to its athletes for suggestions and direction. After finalizing many details and digitizing all the ideas for various features, we just needed to reel in a resort who would be up to the challenge.

Meathead Films started pumping out the designs and written proposals to a handful of Eastern resorts known for their stellar terrain and shapers, and the waiting began. Not surprisingly, the one resort that was the most stoked, willing to accommodate us, and had the most vision, experience, and terrain to host such an event was Sunday River. After many phone calls and emails with Sunday River's new marketing coordinator, Alex Kaufman, we were able to work out all the countless legalities and logistics to get the green light. Without Alex's confidence and masterful coordination in pulling everything together on the resort end, the Superpark wouldn't exist. So after clearing all the hurdles, Meathead athletes and select other talented Maine skiers and snowboarders were recruited for the event. All were hooked up with VIP passes, athlete BBQs, pool access, lodging.... you name it.

As the first crew on the scene, the Meatheads witnessed the amazing harvest of snow on the infamous bump trail, White Heat. We watched as the snowcats winched up and scraped the snowpack down to dirty snow on the steep upper portions of the trail. The cat drivers were working some serious overtime, barely functioning after two days straight of plowing and shaping (while under the influence of copious amounts of coffee and Red Bull), but the final products were oh so sweet: one money, ultra-wide 50 footer at the top, with a double gap/ double quarter pipe at the bottom of the park and a 25 foot box running up the middle (see photos if this makes no sense). And on the third day we added three 25 foot boxes with a double gap next to the bottom feature, which shook things up a little.

The bottom line is that everyone threw down, took some epic spills, and was part of a new chapter in the history books of East Coast skiing. Meathead Films would like to thank the following for making this amazing event a reality: Alex Kaufman, Communications Manager at Sunday River, for his vision of stepping up the park scene in the East and making all of the numerous resort logistics fall into place; all of the SR cat drivers (especially Caleb and Nick) who put in some ridiculous overtime and worked literally through the entire night making our drawings on paper become reality; the lifties who kept our private chair lift spinning and kept the tunes bumping at the jump site; the rest of the staff at SR (administrative and employees) who had a hand in approving the event and hosting over 40 athletes at a closed part of the mountain; all the skiers and snowboarders for throwing down and creating some of the sickest footage and photos; and lastly, the mother earth for giving us three days of beautiful weather. For all the live action, you best pick up your copy of Snow Gods, the only movie this season featuring the Sunday River Heat Harvest Superpark!
