Our most recent odyssey to Newfoundland was Meathead Films' second time traveling to this distant Eastern land, where caribou, snow hares, and really friendly locals roam freely. Amazingly, we decided to make the epic road trip as we did two years ago. So with three Subarus and a 6-passenger van, we headed out from Vermont to catch the ferry to Newfoundland that was only a cool 16 hours away. With a large crew of four filmers, two photographers and 10 athletes, it was quite the experience with rarely a dull moment. Basically, half the athletes were there to focus on BC jumps and urban, and the other to explore Newfoundland's big mountain scene, with two filmers and one photog guy for each crew.
Our playground was the Long Range Mountains in Gros Morne National Park, north of the Blow-Me-Down Mountains that we visited two years ago. Thankfully we reaped the benefits of Long Range Adventures guide, Daine Hewlin, whose vast knowledge of Gros Morne allowed us to access many remote locations and first descents by snowmobile.
Our weather window was large but anything except agreeable for almost the entire trip. Out of 10 days, two were sunny, and of 50+ cm that fell while we were there, only about 3 cm stuck. The "breeze" was consistently stiff, denying us of the deep, and everyone withstood some serious windburn.
We did find a number of stashes though and made sure to slay many large steep lines and sweet booters. The scenery was absolutely spectacular, with true fjords and high alpine terrain surrounding us every day. It made for some ultra unique footage and allowed us to push the Eastern envelope once again.
Overall, we have around 35 hours of footage waiting to be edited throughout the hot summer months. So the Newfoundland segment should be plenty action packed with some never-before-seen, groundbreakingly ridiculously radical footage. For a taste of visual stimulation, peep the pictures below.
Oh, and be sure to check back often for new articles during the summer. We will be recapping many stories from our filming season that we didn't post this past winter. Sorry, but we were busy making movie magic.
Thinking of a ski (or summer) trip to Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland the rugged way? Look up Daine Hewlin and visit Long Range Adventures' website HERE.
