Last week, I met up with the Meatheads and headed to Qubec's Chic Choc Mountains in search of filming some backcountry skiing. All in all, it took 14 hours to get there, but was well worth it. The crew of Dan Marion, Stacey Rachdorf, Rooster, and myself set up base camp at the Auberge International Hostel on the coast of the St. Lawrence River, about 30 minutes from the mountains.
Despite the less than average snow year, we knew there were plenty of worthy lines to be skied. Thankfully, the coverage in the region had stayed pretty consistent throughout the season. It was only a matter of waiting for the right time window and safe snow pack. In typical east coast fashion though, the immediate forecast was filled with highly variable weather and our hopes of great skiing were all but gone.
On the second to last day, we saw mixed precipitation resulting in a hard crust on the snow. As we headed up for what was the last day of the trip, we were hoping to see some better conditions at higher elevations. When we met up with Virginie, our Ski Chic Chocs guide for the day, she had a big smile on her face. At that point we knew it wasn’t going to be all bad. The night before, while it rained up to 4″ inches in parts of New England, the area we planned on skiing had received over a foot of fresh snow. Spirits were instantly lifted as rigorous hiking and big line charging ensued. Be sure to check out the new Meathead movie this fall for a look at what went down.
A huge special thanks to the Auberge Gaspesie International and Ski Chic Chocs for their hospitality and great times!
